When my son was a toddler, I found myself wondering if Mary knew what lay ahead for her child messiah and if so, how she coped. From that thought came the song. For years, I played it on autoharp alone, but Randy's guitar lines bring new life to the tune.
The autoharp is a circa 1972 Oscar Schmidt B-model. It belonged to my sister originally, but is nearly identical to my other 'harp which was bought for $40 a year or two before writing "The Child". It was the best $40 investment I've ever made.
